I did my undergraduate degree at Newnham College, Cambridge and my PhD at King’s College London, and after three years at KCL as a post-doc I went to the University of Surrey as a Lecturer. I stayed there for 31 years, moving up the academic ladder until my retirement as Professor of Pharmacology in 2016, and during that time I taught pharmacology to many different types of student, undergraduate and postgraduate. My research has focused mainly on the roles of adenosine and adenine nucleotides in platelets, smooth muscle and the CNS, and has been funded by The Wellcome Trust, The Medical Research Council, The British Heart Foundation and various pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline. I have been a member of the BPS for many years and more recently a Fellow, and have been on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Pharmacology.
